I can't stop thinking about this one runner...It was a conversation I was having with a runner on Threads (yes, I hang out over there too. It's pretty fun, very BTS, sort of unhinged...) But he was asking how he should be strength training as a runner preparing for his next marathon and was he doing it right? And he proceeded to list a very good, but VERY LONG, strength workout regime.I can't even remember if he included his mobility stuff in there. He might have... But I remember reading specifically that he said he also did (on top of all that) a certain 30 minute core workout for runners on youtube. (I knew exactly which one he was talking about too...) And I sort of froze. I got stumped. Because I was getting overwhelmed just looking at this giant list of things he was doing (in addition to running), and he was asking....for more???If you're new here, and even if you're not... One of my most important Dr. Whitt-isms is "Sometimes more is just more." More is not always better. But it's INCREDIBLY easy to get trapped in "I really need to do more core work. Oh, I need to be lifting heavy. Maybe I need a lift-heavy-workout of like 5 exercises? Oh wait, I need to do like 3-4 plyos to make sure my Achilles doesn't flare up this training cycle..." DOES IT EVER END? Yes. And Back to the runner at the beginning of this email: his crazy long list of exercises + 30 min core workout inspired this week's 5 minute, 4 exercise core workout.
Because having a loooong 2 hour list of exercises you need to do to keep running doesn't make you a better runner. Doing a 30 minute core workout is cool! But wouldn't it be better if every strength exercise you did became a core exercise? (it's possible! and I talk about it in the blog.) Because even if you don't go check out the circuit, even though I hope you do,... I want to take away this ONE POINT:You don't have to do a giant core circuit for it to be effective. You need consistency. Something that matches YOUR LIFE so you can get it done reliably. Hopefully, this week's circuit helps make that possible. It used to be one of the banes of my PT-existence. Elbows take the cake. I don't like elbows. Good thing we don't use those to run.
