Summer miles are coming: are you prepared?

I know the lingering cold weather has you questioning if warmer temps and longer runs will EVER actually get here...

but they will.

(and if you'd like to steal some of my warm and too-humid-too-soon weather in northern Alabama, I will gladly trade for cooler temps lol)

But with spring (and eventually summer) slooowly coming around the corner, I feel like this is "Runner's New Year"...

that time in your training plan where you can't help but wonder, "what CAN I accomplish this year? How far can I run? How fast can I get?"

So before you start sneaking in more miles and harder workouts, don't forget: use protection.

I'm talking running-specific, injury-proofing strength exercises to keep you ankles strong and sprain free, tight-hips blasting mobility circuits, and all-around lower body strength workouts to help you tackle the most blistering paces.

Duh.

That's why I wanted to share some of your favorite blog posts.

The ones where A LOT of you reached out and said these were the answers you were looking for: the perfect exercises that actually work and fixed your running niggles.

So lets break these down...

If you've struggled with arch pain or general ankle tightness, you'll want to check out:

If tight hips are the bane of your existence and no amount of stretching seems to help, these mobility exercises will:

If you're a frequent ankle sprainer or somehow *always* aggravate your Achilles Tendon, these exercises will help prevent that:

If you're wondering how you get started strength training like a long distance runner and want strong quads, glutes, and calves to stay injury free, I've got you covered:

Don't worry: I'm working on NEW exercises for next week as we speak.

(focusing on outer vs inner ankle pain that may be coming from a weak soleus and how to test this and fix it for yourself!)

Because I won't lie: creating Strong Running Foundations and getting that out to you has been a blast! But like any new BIG content project or strength program, sometimes it just takes a lot of time to create quality workouts, blogs, and vidoes.

So I genuinely appreciate you all sticking around and being patient with me while I balance hours in the PT clinic and creating new resources and exercise circuits for you all. Big, big thank you.

And in the mean time, Happy Runner's New Year ;)

Dare to Train Differently,

Marie Whitt, PT, DPT //@dr.whitt.fit

I saw this piece of content on Instagram today: "When I meet someone new: Them: 'I hear you're into running!' Me: 'Yea, but I don't think you're fully prepared for this conversation.'" ...and I straight up SNORTED. I loved it. Because running is a big deal for us! And it shows, especially if someone is willing to open that door and start the conversation. Which reminded me... I haven't asked YOU recently. How's your running going? Were there race specific goals you wanted to accomplish in...

You can bet, when it comes to the strength training mistakes that runners make… I’ve probably made most of them. I had a coach tell me before to do 2 x 50 body weight lunges to fix my runner’s knee. Didn’t work. It just left me sore. I went on a whole HIIT workout-spree in grad school. I got really sweaty and only a little stronger. I tried a billion push ups and all the body weight exercises you could think of during Covid because all the gyms were closed. I got better at push ups, but that...

Raise your hand if you love reading about running or workout plans. ok, maybe this is more for the nerdy runners here…but aren’t we all secretly kinda nerdy, pouring over strava data and hoping our garmins don’t tell us we were unproductive? Case in point: data is fun. It tells us what we’ve achieved. Where we fell short. And usually based on all that…how we can do EVEN BETTER next time. The only thing that would be cooler: is skipping the “where we fell short” part. What if you could? What...
